It’s the most wonderful time of the year – Christmas market season.
There’s nowhere on earth quite as festive as a Christmas market: the hustle and bustle of happy revellers, the smell of mulled wine brewing and traditional foods cooking, and the sounds of Christmas songs filling your ears – pure bliss!
If you’re wanting to get into the Christmas spirit, have you considered indulging in a winter weekend getaway? There are a whole host of stunning Christmas markets across Europe just waiting to be discovered – here are three of our favourites…
Basel Christmas Markets, Switzerland
Basel has consistently been voted as the best Christmas market in Switzerland and remains a firm European favourite. Basel’s Old Town is, quite simply, Christmas personified. Also known as the ‘Christmas City’, come winter you will find Basel adorned with golden lights, with the streets lined with pine trees – there truly is no better location for a Christmas market!
Basel Christmas Markets are split into two sections, Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz, and are made up of around 180 stalls in total featuring foods, gifts and activities. There really is something at Basel to enchant everyone!
Nuremberg Christmas Markets, Germany
If traditional German markets are what you’re after, you won’t find much better than the stunning displays over at Nuremberg. Towards the end of the year, the Altstadt receives a stunning Christmas makeover, and the festivities are kicked off with a dazzling opening ceremony which attracts locals and tourists alike in their hundreds.
Across the Nuremberg Christmas Markets you can expect nearly 200 traditionally adorned huts, 30 of which date as far back as 1890. Explore stalls selling locally crafted goods and gifts, and indulge in culinary delights including traditional German Bratwurst.
Winter Wonderland, Hyde Park, London
If you’re looking for something a little closer to home, look no further than London’s Winter Wonderland. Spanning across Hyde Park in the centre of London, Winter Wonderland boasts hundreds of stalls, an ice kingdom, the UK’s largest outdoor ice rink and a fairground with a huge observation wheel offering breathtaking views over the city.
Whether you want to head and watch one of the spectacular shows on offer, have a mulled wine or cider in the Bavarian Village or opt for an adrenaline-pumping trip around the fairground, there are few better places to celebrate Christmas than Winter Wonderland.
What to pack for a winter weekend break
So, you’ve decided to treat yourself to a winter weekend break. But, what do you need to pack for your trip?
Warmth is, of course, the top priority. You’re going to need to wrap up warm for the outdoor markets, so be sure to pack lots of layers, cosy knitwear and your favourite woolly hat, scarf and gloves. When it comes to footwear, you’ll be spending so much time exploring that comfort is a definite must. A pair of fashionable yet functional flat ankle boots is the ideal versatile option for a winter weekend away. Opt for a classic, versatile brown or black leather ankle boot that will go with any outfit, or make a little more of a statement with embellished, studded or bold burgundy options.
